Effective Preschool Math Activities - Time Activity Preschool

Preschool Time Activity:
Preschool children need to learn to read time. This time activity will help the children organize themselves in time.

The children will learn the meaning of new words; clock wise and anti-clock wise.

The children will be shown, the long arm indicates minutes, and the short arm indicates, hours.

When the long arm stands exactly on the twelve, it indicates an hour, the short arm indicates the precise hour.

The children will stimulate and develop their visual observation and auditory -, and oral skills during the activity.

Materials:

  1. little-rabbits'-first-time-book
  2. Alarm Clock for Demonstration.
  3. Watch for Demonstration.
  4. Toy Clock for Demonstration.
  5. Poem.

Procedure:

  • The teacher will use a clocks and watch, with movable arms to indicate the terminology; clock wise and anti- clockwise.
  • The teacher should teach the children the long arm indicates a minute, but when the long arm stands on the twelve it indicates together with the short arm, the hour. The short arm indicating the specific hour.
  • The teacher should set the clock on the hour and let the children read the time. Practice with different time settings, for instance, eleven o'clock, four o' clock, and so on. Digital time should not be introduced at this time.
  • The children should be taught how long a minute is by counting up to sixty, the teacher should indicate sixty counts are equal to sixty seconds which are equal to one minute.

  • The teacher should use a clock indicating seconds, and a full circle, moving from the twelve round to the twelve, indicating one minute has passed.
  • The teacher should introduce games for the children lasting a minute, for instance do not move for a minute, do not blink your eyes for a minute, use other time examples as well. The children should watch the clock as the seconds tick by.
  • The children will learn the poem on time, and say it together, or individually.

Poem: Time:

Listen to the kitchen clock!

The kitchen clock is saying "Tick-tock!

Tick-tock, tick-tock, six o'clock!

Are you getting up?

My little watch is saying 'Tick'

Tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick!

Be quick - be quick- be quick - be quick!

The dining room clock is saying 'Dong-dong!

Dong-dong, dong-dong, now hurry along!

Hurry along to school, dong-dong!

But that clock's always wrong!

My watch will tell me when it's eight.

I'm eating everything on my plate.

My watch and I are never late!

We're never late for school.

What's that? Oh dear! It's now past eight?

My watch has stopped and we are late!

My watch and I are very late -

We're late for school today!

Norah Taylor.
