Zoo Theme Preschool Activities:

The preschool zoo activity teach the children the meaning of the word zoo.

There are many places where animals are kept,but a zoo is a unique place, because all though the animals are kept in cages, the specific animals' natural habitat is being simulated.

The children will stimulate their auditory -, visual observation -, as well as their fine motor muscles during the zoo activity.

Materials:

  1. Colorful Pictures of Wild -, Farm -, domestic animals, and birds.
  2. CD with Animal Sounds, and CD Player.
  3. if-anything-ever-goes-wrong-at-the-zoo

Procedure:

  • Play the CD with animal sounds, and ask the children to identify the correct animal.
  • Then show the children pictures of wild animals, and ask them how the animals live in nature.
  • Explain the word habitat to the children.
  • Explain that zoo's are built in cities, so we can view animals in a safe, friendly environment.


  • Wild animals from far a way places like Africa can be viewed in our own cities.
  • Children living in cities, may also not have an opportunity to view farm animals on a farm, but can view them up close in a zoo.
  • Domestic animals are not kept in a zoo, but would be cared for in animal shelters.
  • A wide variety of wild birds could also be viewed in a zoo.
  • A lot of thought and care goes into the planning of the cages, and the animals are well taken care of.
  • Animals who became endangered in their natural environment, are kept in zoo's over the world, to save the animal species.
  • The children will complete the auditory worksheet.
