Effective Preschool Theme Activities
Household Items


Preschool activities with household items proves to provide all preschool children with ample opportunities to have fun and build their self confidence at the same time!

This visual observation activity will provide the children with opportunities to explore their creativity, and apply themselves.

During the activity the preschool children will place objects on the table in a specific place and order.

Left, right, above, next to, are examples of words indicating position, is mentioned throughout the demonstration, therefore it is also a good activity to practice the preschool children's directionality, and spatial orientation.

Activity 1: Setting the Table!

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. play-together-learn-together
  2. Table.
  3. Cutlery.
  4. Table Cloth or Place Mats.
  5. Glasses.
  6. Vase and Flowers.
  7. Cardboard.
  8. Black Marker pen.
  9. Paper or Cloth Napkins.
  10. Furnished English Wooden Dollhouse.

Procedure:

  • The preschool children will observe the teacher, demonstrating how to set a table properly.
  • The teacher will then give the children an opportunity to practice, how to set the table, themselves.
  • The children should be encourage to be original, and explore their creativity when setting the table


  • The preschool children could be shown how to fold name place cards, using cardboard, and a black marker pen to trace their names, and place the card at the top of their plates, more or less in the middle of the plate.
  • Last but not least, the children should learn how to fold a napkin, and where to place the napkin, next to the plate, on the persons left hand side.
  • The teacher should demonstrate a simple way, and could advance to a more complicated napkin fold as they develop their skills in follow up lessons
For a follow up activity on setting the table, the children could color a placemat, with plate, and cutlery, and draw "food" on the plate, once again practicing their spatial orientation -, and directionality skills.

Activity 2:
Materials needed for the Activity:
  1. Triangular Shaped Profile Pencils.(Ideal for improving the preschool child's grip.)
  2. Picture to Color, and Draw.
Procedure:

  • The children will color their placemats, plates, and draw the food on a specified place, for instance, potatoes in the middle of the plate, peas in the middle on the left hand side of the plate, carrots in the middle of the plate, to the right hand side, meat above the potatoes, pumpkin under the potatoes.
  • The teacher should use the words, indicating the position of the food on the plates.
  • The children should follow the oral instructions step by step.


Another fun activity involving household items, and in this case, cutlery. Sorting the Cutlery!

The preschool children develop their organizational skills by sorting objects according to their shape, color or the function they have.

Cutlery should be placed in a container.

The children should take turns in sorting the cutlery according to the different kinds of objects, for instance: knives, spoons, forks, teaspoons, and blunt knives.
