Community Helper Activity

Preschool Community Helper Activity:

keeping-you-safe-a-book-about-a-police-officer
During the preschool community helper activity the children will learn to describe a police officer, in uniform, accurately.

The children will describe from memory, and then from
visual observation.

The children will learn to give attention to detail. The preschool children will develop their visual memories.

Materials:

  1. community-helper
  2. Pictures of Police Officers in Uniform.
  3. Sheets of Paper.
  4. Triangular Shaped Profile Pencils. (improving the preschooler's grip.)

Procedure:

  • The teacher will explain to the children why it is important for a police officer to wear a uniform and why they should be able to describe the police officer in uniform.
  • The children should name other occupations where wearing of a uniform is essential, for instance: "nurse, doctor, soldier, fireman."
  • The teacher should explain to the children it is important for them to know how a police officers uniform look, because this will help them to recognize them quickly when they need them.
  • The teacher will ask the children to describe a police officer in uniform, from memory. The children may omit important detail.

  • The teacher will then show them a detailed picture of a police officer in uniform.
  • The teacher will ask the children to observe the picture for a few minutes, and then redo the oral description of the police officer in uniform.
  • The teacher will emphasize important detail, for instance the police officer's uniform is a dark blue color.
  • The police officer's uniform always has a gold star emblem on it.
  • They wear a thick leather belt where a pistol, handcuffs, and a baton can be attached to.
  • These are the equipment a policeman need and should be easy to reach in case of an emergency.

  • The police officers also need to wear good boots, to run fast, and not slip when following an assailant.
  • The children will be asked to draw a police officer in uniform, from memory, after the visual observation exercise.
  • The practical drawing exercise will indicate clearly how well the children's visual observation skills and visual memories are developed.
  • The preschool children should draw the picture again. They should compare the two drawing attempts.
