Health and Safety Activity

Preschool Health and Safety Activity:

Preschool children love an outing, and therefore it is important to make them aware of potential danger when planning a hike. Teach the children the importance of good planning, before heading off!

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. busy-mom's-preschool-book-of-preschool-activities
  2. First Aid Kit.
  3. Water Bottles.
  4. Packed Lunch Boxes.
  5. Compass for Demonstration.
  6. Sunblock.
  7. skip-and-wiggles-play-it-safe

Procedure:

  • Take the children on a class outing, but before you leave, ask the children what they think, they will need o their mini-hike. Encourage them to share their thoughts with you. Teach them how to plan.
  • Take the children to a nearby park. Let them sit in a circle and discuss the planned hike.
  • Explain that before you can go on the hike, hikers need to plan adequately. Discuss the safety measures you need to consider before leaving.

  • Talk about potential dangers you may encounter, for example: exposure to weather elements.

  • Explain to the children that if you plan adequately, you can protect yourself. Safety measures are your own responsibility.
  • Discuss the equipment the children would use on the hike. For instance, sun block to protect then from the sun. Explain the effects of sun exposure over a long period of time.
  • The children should also be encouraged to think about eats and drinks for the hike. A water bottle will be essential item. Discuss the effects of dehydration of the body. Snacks that provide the body with energy should also be discussed.
  • A compass should also be one of the essential items named. Discuss the importance of knowing in which direction you are going and finding your way home!

  • A raincoat is another essential to include on the list. Weather can be very unpredictable! If you stay wet for a long time, it will cause discomfort and you might even catch a cold!
  • It is very important to have a small first aid kit, incase of an emergency. It will come in handy when you need to clean a wound or when a wound needs to be bandaged. The necessary tablets should also be included.
  • The teacher should be in charge of the first aid kit at all times!
  • Start the planned mini-hike and let the children have a picnic halfway.
