Effective Preschool Science Activities
Activity on Creepy Crawlers

The preschool activity on creepy crawlers will expand the children's general knowledge on snails, such as, the scientific class of snails and facts on snails.

The children will improve their visual observation, and auditory skills during the lesson.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. beetles-and-bugs
  2. Garden Snails for Observation.
  3. Colorful Pictures on the Garden Snail.
  4. Magnifying Glasses.

Procedure:

  • The teacher will give the children time to observe the snails, using the magnifying glasses, and comparing the actual snails brought to class for observation purposes with the snails in the pictures.
  • The teacher will teach the children facts on the snails: The scientific class of the snails: Gastropod.
  • Snails form an important part of the food web, for instance, snails are eaten by other animals, like birds, humans eat certain snail species, mostly the sea snails.

  • Snails are known to damage crops and garden shrubs and plants are a favorite for garden snails.

  • Therefore the garden snail is a herbivore, a plant eating animal, and is not very popular, damaging our garden plants and the farmers vegetable gardens.
  • Snails can devour hard, unusual plant materials.
  • Snails have soft bodies, and a coiled shell to curl into. Some of the coiled shells curl to the left, and some coiled shells curl to the right.
  • Snails have a good sense of smell and can see fairly well.

  • Snails have sensors or feelers to detect movement.
  • The teacher should let the children watch the interesting, glistening patterns the snails leave behind when moving over a surface.
  • The teacher could end the activity by letting the children feed a snail with a lettuce leave, and observe the snail closely.
