Effective Preschool Theme Activities
Sensory Program Activities


Sensory Program Activities for preschool children willteach them more on their five senses. Touch and feel is the first of the five senses to be addressed in the following activities.

Activity 1: Touch or Feel:Creating a "Feely" Box.
Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Cardboard Box.
  2. Objects for Feeling.

Procedure:
  • Start the activity by asking the children what we use to feel with? They will most likely answer; Fingers.
  • Start making the "feely" box.
  • Cut an opening for a hand to go through.
  • The box should contain objects of various sizes, textures, and shapes into the box.


  • Each child should have an opportunity to feel and explore the items inside the box.
  • The children should be encouraged to use describing words such as; dry, big, small, round, square, soft, hard, smooth, and so on.
  • The children should try to identify the object from the description.


Activity 2: Smell.

Smell is the next sense, addressed in the sensory theme.
Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Fruit, for instance lemons and oranges.
  2. Coffee Beans.
  3. Lavender Twigs.
  4. Blind Fold.
  5. touch-and-feel-book

Procedure:
  • Place the different items in separate bowls.
  • Blind fold the children and let them smell the different bowls one at a time.
  • The children should try and identify the content by smelling it. Are the children able to smell the content correctly?


Activity 3: Taste:

Taste, the third of the five senses, addressed in the sensory theme.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Food Items, Tasting: Salty, Sweet, Sour, and Bitter.
  2. Blind Folds.
  3. Tongue Chart.
  4. the-five-senses

Procedure:
  • Blind fold a child at a time.
  • Let the child taste the food items and try to identify the correct taste.
  • The teacher should use a tongue chart and explain to the children where the different taste buds are allocated.

Activity 4: Eyes, the most important sense!

Assisting with our sense of balance, amongst all the other benefits.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Blind Fold.

Procedure:

  • Ask the children what we use our eyes for? The teacher should explain: our eyes provides us with valuable information, for instance, who, what, where. Our eyes are also a sense of balance.
  • Blind fold a child and give the child directions to follow, for instance, walk five steps to the left, turn right and walk ten steps backwards, and so on.


  • The child will be asked to remove the blind fold and follow the same instructions, with out the blind fold. What deductions can be made?
  • The teacher should ask the children what happens when we walk into a dark room? Do our eyes adjust after a while?


Activity 5: Hearing, another very important auditory sense!

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Bell to Ring.
  2. Sounds Around Us.
  3. my-own-five-senses

Procedure:

  • The children should sit in a circle with their eyes closed, and listen attentively to all the sounds around us.
  • The children should report back after a period of time. The teacher should assist the children with sounds not mentioned.


  • Next, one child should leave the circle and ring a bell. Starting close by, moving further and further away. The children should try and determine how far sounds travel.
