Preschool Gym Activities


Preschool Gym Activities:
The preschool gym activities will develop the child's balance, body movement, co-ordination and stimulate their gross motor muscles.

Activity 1: Developing a Child's Balance:

  1. Crab Walk:

  2. Children sit on the floor, place their hands on the floor behind them,and raise their bodies in order to stand on their feet. "Walk" backwards on hands and feet.

  3. Frog Squat:

  4. Children assume a squatting position, placing hands on their hips. One leg is extended to the side and then returned. Repeat with other leg, with hopping motion.

  5. Bunny Hop:

  6. Children place their hands at the sides of their heads, forming rabbit ears. Hop forward, keeping both feet together.

  7. Basic Body Movement:



  8. Snakes:

  9. Children lie on their backs, arms together overhead. Bend at hips and waist, moving body to right and left.

  10. Fish:

  11. Children lie on their stomachs and imitate a fish swimming.

  12. Bear Walk:

  13. Children assume hands and knees position. Move right legs and right arms, left arms and left legs. Walk slowly, imitating a bear.

  14. Develop Rhythm:

  15. To develop basic locomotor rhythm, the teacher should let the children do these basic movements to the beat of a drum or clapping.

    Children gallop and skate.

    Children run and glide.

    Children hop and skip.

    Children dance and sing.

  16. Body Rhythms:


  17. Try to include all body parts in this activity. Add the rhythm of a drum or hand clapping as well.

    Children click sounds with their tongues.

    Children bend their hands forth at wrist.

    Children shrug shoulders, up and down, forward and backwards.

    Raise one arm at a time, up and down, and sideways.

    Raise legs one at a time, up and down, and sideways.

    An ideal way of ending the activity is to play gross motor games,for all preschool children love to play games, and develop their gross motor muscles while enjoying themselves. Good examples of gross motor games are:



  18. The Wheelbarrow Game.


  19. Rope Jumping Games.


  20. Hide and Seek.


  21. Ball Games.


  22. Action Songs.
