Preschool Math Activities:

Number - and math activities form an important part of the preschool childrens' preparation for school.

They will enjoy the counting rhyme math activity. They will practice their number recognition and number value, and at the same time learning, a counting rhyme, developing their auditory skills.

The children will expand their vocabulary during the counting rhyme activity. The children will stimulate theirfine motor skills during the activity.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Counters. (20 for each preschooler)
  2. Counting Rhyme.
  3. Number Cards. (1 - 20 for each preschooler)
  4. Number Wall Chart.
  5. counting-rhyme-and-rhythm

Procedure:

  • They will start the number activity with counting activities.
  • To warm up the teacher will ask the children to count from 0 - 20, jumping in the air on each count.
  • The teacher will then ask the children to follow the teacher on the number chart and count from 20 - 0.


  • Next, the preschool children will say the days of the week in sequence, repeat in a loud voice, then a whisper, and a third time in a normal tone of voice.
  • The teacher will ask them to sing a song, practicing the months of the year, a view times over.
  • The teacher will then read the counting rhyme to them, asking them to listen attentively.
  • Poem: One, two, buckle my shoe:

    One, two,

    Buckle my shoe;

    Three, four,

    Knock at the door;

    Five, six,

    Pick up sticks;

    Seven, eight,

    Lay them straight;

    Nine, ten,

    A good fat hen.

    Eleven, twelve,

    Dig and delve;

    Thirteen, Fourteen,

    Maids a-courting;

    Fifteen, sixteen,

    Maids in the kitchen;

    Seventeen, eighteen,

    Maids a-waiting;

    Nineteen, twenty,

  • The teacher will take time to explain the meaning of the vocabulary used in the counting rhyme, for instance: buckle, and courting.
  • Next, the teacher will ask them to listen the teacher reading the counting rhyme, and every time a number is mentioned they will take out the number card that indicates the number mentioned.
  • They will then learn and practice the counting rhyme with the teacher.
  • They will pack the number cards, according to the rhyme, and then match the card with their counters.
