Effective Preschool Math Activities – Number Activities

  • math-activities-for-young-learners
  • Hands on number activities for preschool children will provide them with unique learning opportunities!

The children will learn to add and subtract through a number story. The teacher should work with numbers which are familiar to them, for instance, 0 - 20.

The teacher should first do addition, with only one calculation in the story sum.

The teacher could continue with subtraction story sums.

They will enjoy the hands on math activity, and various perceptual skills are being employed.
    Materials Needed for the Activity:

    1. Daisy Petals form the Garden.
    2. Basket for collecting the Flowers.
    3. Number Charts and Number Flash Cards.

    Building Blocks (40)
    Procedure:

    • The teacher will take the children on a class outing and ask the children to look out for flowers with petals for instance, the daisy.
    • With permission the children may pick the flowers and put them in a basket the teacher should provide for the outing.
    • They will love the outing in the school garden collecting flowers. The teacher should monitor the flower picking, and return to class.

    • The teacher will hand the preschoolers a flower or daisy form the garden. The teacher will give the children the opportunity to count their petals on their flowers.
    • The teacher will then start with the addition number stories, using the flowers in the basket as her aids.
    • For example, I have a white flower, and my friend gives me two red flowers, and I then pick a yellow flower from my garden.
    • How many flowers do I have all together? The teacher should repeat the number story and after the children have given the teacher the answer, the teacher should write the number story sum on the white board for the children to "read", for example: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4.
    • The teacher should explain; when you get more or something is added the math term is "+" plus.
    • When the teacher is sure all the children understood, the teacher may continue with subtraction number stories, using the flowers from the basket as the aids.
    • For example, I received a bunch of 10 flowers in a bouquet and 4 died, I took them out, how many flowers are left? The teacher should count out the 10 flowers and then remove the 4 flowers.

    • Together with the teacher, they should count the remaining flowers.
    • The teacher should write the number story on the white board for the child to "read", for example, 10- 4 = 6.
    • The teacher should explain once again, that remove, take away, implies - , minus, in a number story.
Suggestion: Do only one of the calculations, addition or subtraction.
