Activity 2:

This preschool hands on math activity will present the children with a fun learning activity using wild animals.

Children are curious about numbers, and enjoy activities about nature and animals. This activity combines them both nicely!

The children will learn, numbers are all around us and form part of our everyday lives. We see numbers on clocks, streets, calendars, newspapers, television and in stores. They will see numbers in books, on their clothing and on cars.

Simple number activities will help them to practice their number - and visual observation skills.

Number stories are a fun way of developing the preschool child's auditory memory skills.

The teacher should explain the terminology: addition and subtraction to the children and give them a practical example, making use of counters.

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. little-rabbit's-first-number-book
  2. Colorful Pictures of Wild Animals.
  3. Sheets of Paper.
  4. Paint and Paintbrushes.
  5. Counters.

  • The children will count wild animals' legs, horns, ears, tails, and the animals themselves.
  • The teacher will ask the preschool children to listen to her number story and see if they can calculate the answer, for example: "If one giraffe standing under a tree eating it's foliage has four legs, how many legs do two giraffes have?" "One elephant drinking water with it's long trunk and has two ears, how many ears do three elephants have?" "There are four lions stalking prey together, two lions walk away, how many lions are left?"

  • They should practice their addition and subtraction skills when answering the story sums. The preschool children can use their counters to add or subtract the numbers.
  • The children can end the activity by painting wild animals on sheets of paper and do their own story sums, using their paintings, and drawings to describe the animals and do the calculations.
