Effective Preschool Math Activities
Hands On Measurement Activities



The preschool hands on measurement activity will teach the children basic information on measurement, in enjoyable activities.

Encourage the children to measure things indoors and outdoors, by using their own hands and feet!
Activity 1:
Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. ten-beads-tall
  2. Triangular Shaped Profile Pencils. (Ideal for improving the youngster's pencil grip.)

Procedure:

  • The children should stand in front of the classroom mirror, and view themselves from head to toe.
  • The teacher should ask the children to measure themselves, using their hands, for instance, how many hands measure the length of your head, shoulders, bodies, legs, arms, and so on.


  • The children should then be encourage to measure objects in the classroom, for instance they should measure books, tables, and so on.
  • The teacher should explain the difference between measuring the height, or length, and measuring the width of objects.
  • The children should be given sheets of paper and pencils, and they should then draw themselves, keeping their measurements in mind.


Activity 2: Getting Taller:

The children love visable evidence that they are growing taller. This simple activity proves to be a favorite with all preschool children.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. number-practice-pages
  2. Wall chart.
  3. Coloring Crayons.


Procedure:

  • The children should all receive a wall chart with their names, and the basic measurement markings, written on it.
  • The children should decorate their wall charts.
  • The teacher should use prestick to stick the wall charts against the wall, and start measuring each preschool child.


  • The teacher should indicate the child's measurements, and repeat the measurement activity every three months.
  • The children will love to see their growth charts, and experience themselves growing taller!
