Effective Preschool Holiday Activities
Kite Day Activities

a-sky-full-of-kites

Activity 1: Paper Kite:

Folding their own paper kite will present preschoolers with a lot of fun! They will follow the step by step instructions and therefore stimulate their visual observation and auditory skills. The children will also stimulate their fine motor skills when decorating the kite.

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. Colored Construction Paper.
  2. Chunky Wool or Cord for the Tail.
  3. Black Marker Pen.
  4. Colored Crayons or Paint and Paintbrushes.
  5. Colored Ribbons for the Tail.
  6. Glue.

Procedure:

  • Preschool children will firstly fold the square construction paper diagonally into a big triangle.
  • Next, the children will be instructed to divide the triangles into another two triangles. When unfolding the square the children will see four triangles in equal sizes.

  • They should glue the outer triangles inward to form the kite shape.
  • The children can then decide to use a black marker pen to draw a face on the kite.
  • The kite could be given some color with the crayons or paint.
  • Last but not least, the preschool children should add the tail.
  • The tail could be decorated with colored ribbons down the line. The children should fasten the cord or wool to the kite by inserting the cord or wool into the triangles and glue it.
  • They can add extra touches by adding wool for a fringe or a moustache. Have fun while exploring your creativity!

Activity 2: Kite Day Poem:

Preschool children are enthusiastic about all the Kite Day activities. The poem activity will stimulate the children's auditory and oral skills.

The poem lesson could be follow by the actual making of a kite with a brown paper bag as suggested in the poem, while stimulating their fine motor - and eye-hand-co-ordination skills.

Poem: Kites:

Brown paper,

String and glue:

A big kite -

Brand new!

Run fast,

Run slow;

Wind to strong -

Wind won't blow.

Up at last,

Tugging tight;

Holding fast

With all my might.

Tail out streaming,

Flying high -

A distant speck

In the shy.

Wendy Brown.

Materials for the activity is given in the poem. The teacher should make this a fun practical poem experience!
