Flags for Flag Day!

These flags are simple and all children will be able to participate and experience success!

The children will stimulate their fine motor muscleswhen creating the flag, at the same time interacting with their friends, sharing ideas, and skills.

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. arts-and-crafts-busy-book
  2. Colored Construction Paper.
  3. Triangular Shapes to Trace.
  4. Triangular Shaped Profile Pencils.(Ideal to improve their Grip.)
  5. Scissors and Glue.
  6. String.(Long enough for all the Flags)
  7. Black Marker Pen.
  8. Materials for Decorating.
  9. Stapler and Staples.

Procedure:

  • The children will trace big triangular shapes on all the different color cardboard with their triangular shaped profile pencils.
  • They will then retrace the triangles with their black marker pens.
  • They will cut out and color or decorate their flags, each exploring their own creativity!

  • The teacher will then staple all the triangular shaped flags to the string, folding the widest part of the flag over at the top, in order for the sharp ends to point to the bottom.
  • The teacher should display their creations by hanging the flags on a string, over the length of the class.

Activity 2: Making of a National Flag:

They will stimulate their fine motor skills, as well as explore their creativity with the making of a flag!

The children can make national flags or they can just explore with colors and shapes.

The example that follows will be the stars and stripes! Enjoy!

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. meet-our-flag-old-glory
  2. Construction Paper: White, 9 x 12" Red, 4 and a half inches x 12" Blue, 6 x 4 and a half inches.
  3. White Crayon, or White Paper for Stars.
  4. Scissor, and Glue.
  5. Star shaped Stencil.

Procedure:

  • The children will start with the red construction paper, folding it in half and then cutting it on the fold.
  • They should repeat the procedure with each half, to make four strips.
  • The children will then fold each of these half to make eight.

  • The teacher should supervise the children closely, to cut on the fold and not to hurt themselves with the scissors.
  • They will start pasting the red stripes from the top of the white paper, down to the bottom, leaving a white stripe a broad as the red one, in order to create the white and red striped effect.
  • When the seventh red stripe is pasted on the white construction paper, the children should then cut away any remaining white paper.

  • They should trim the blue paper and glue it to the top, left hand corner, covering the top seven, red and white stripes.(four red- and three white stripes.)
  • They could then add the white stars, drawing them with white crayon on the blue paper, or cut out white stars from white paper, and glue it on their flag!
  • The teacher should assist the children with a star stencil, in order for them to trace the star shape, and then cut it out,and glue it on the blue paper.
