Finger play games for preschool children forms an important part of the development of the children's fingers and hands.

Activities like these should be done on a regular basis, in order for preschool children's fingers - and hand muscles to develop, and be prepared for the writing of alphabet letters and numbers.

Activity 1:

This is a fun finger play activity for the child, and at the same time developing and stimulating the preschool child's fine motor muscles!
Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. lap-time-finger-play....
  2. Aprons (this activity can get messy!)
  3. Laundry Starch.(it is advisable not to use starch containing Borax, it tends to become lumpy!)
  4. Powder Paint or Vegetable Coloring.
  5. Paper.
  6. the-little-hands-art-book

Procedure:

  • The teacher should make a bowl of laundry starch, of a thick, creamy consistency.
  • The teacher could color the starch by using the powder paint or the vegetable food coloring.


  • They should wear their aprons when starting to play with their fingers in the colored starch!
  • They should be encouraged to form interesting patterns and lines with their fingers, and squeeze, mix, spread, smooth, or drag their fingers through the colored starch!
  • The children will be asked to draw a picture with their fingers in the starch.
  • The teacher should demonstrate how patterns can be created by using a plastic comb or a fork, and other objects.
  • The teacher could make prints of their drawings by placing a piece of paper over their drawings, and lightly rub over the paper.
  • The children should wash their hands after completing the activity! Enjoy!



Activity 2:

This simple finger play activity will not only stimulate the preschool child's fingers, but also the child's eye-hand-co-ordination, and sequencing of a pattern: by color, shape, or numbers.

Eye-hand-co-ordination activities are essential for developing the child's eyes and hands working together, to be able to perform different classroom activities.

Materials Needed for the Activity:

  1. Beads, Colored, and with holes, so the children would be able to string the beads.
  2. String.
  3. a-finger-puppet-play-book


Procedure:

The children will be asked to string beads. They can create an item like a bracelet or necklace, after stringingtheir beads.

They can sit at their desks stringing beads:

  • The children can string beads randomly.
  • The children can string beads by color.
  • The children can string them by shape.
  • The children can string them by number.
  • The children can string them according to a specific pattern.
