Preschool Nutrition Art Activity: Activity 1:

Summer is the time of year when there is a abundance of fruit and vegetables! This is the time when they should be introduced to all the different kinds of vegetables.

The teacher should teach the children the importance of nutrientsand fibre vegetablesp rovide for our bodies. The children will expand the general knowledge on vegetables, while enjoying the creative activity.

Materials:

  1. Colorful Pictures of Vegetables.
  2. Real examples of Vegetables.
  3. Sheets of Paper.
  4. Paint and Paint brushes.

Procedure:

  • The teacher should show the children colorful pictures of different kinds of vegetables, and where they grow, for instance; potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes and carrots. All grow under ground.
  • Green beans are climber plants, and tomatoes, pumpkin and broccoli grow above ground and can be picked from the mother plants.
  • The teacher should give the children examples of the different nutrients, vitamins and fibre our bodies get from eating vegetables.
  • The teacher should encourage the children to participate in the class discussion on what vegetables they like most, and why.
  • The preschool children should complete drawings of vegetables, and paint them, developing their eye-hand-co-ordination skills.


Activity 2: Preschool Nutrition Activity:

The preschool children need to learn as from early on, food provides the body's nutrients.

Different food provide nutrients which enables to body to function optimally. The children need to learn sweets and unhealthy food should be eaten only on special occasions.

The children will love the practical role play nutrition activity. Role play provide opportunities for children to developtheir confidence!

Materials:

  1. Practical Demonstration with Fruit and Vegetable Hand Puppets.
  2. Graph (indicating the nutritional intake.)
  3. Vegetable and Fruit Puppets.
  4. Ice-Cream and Cake Puppets.

Procedure:

  • The children will gather and watch a puppet show between "good" characters; the vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and the "bad" characters, the sweets, unhealthy oily foods, ice-cream, and so on.
  • The teacher should use colorful characters and emphasize the importance of the body's need of nutrients in order to perform optimally, which it derives from vegetables, fruit, dairy -, whole wheat products, and the all important proteins found in fish, meat and eggs.


  • The battle should be won by the "good" characters, and a compromise should be made between the characters, for instance, the sweets, ice-cream, and unhealthy fast foods will be eaten only on special occasions, as a treat!
  • The teacher should use the nutritional graph to indicate to the children, on a daily basis, what the required intake of healthy food is.
