Effective Preschool Alphabet Activities
Speech Activity

Speech activities for preschool children include activities where the child memorizes poems, parts of stories, or the sequence of events.

The cognitive stimulation forms a very important part of the child's preparation to be ready for school. During the preschool phase, the children are keen on learning about a wide variety of topics, for instance, nature, animals, and people, to name but a few.

Perceptual skills need to be integrated in activities and learning poems will develop the childs' auditory - and oral skills.

The children will be made aware of the "little sounds" in nature, and how to listen to them.

Materials needed for the Activity:

  1. curious-kids-go-to-preschool
  2. Poem.
  3. Colorful Pictures of Nature.

Procedure:
  • The teacher will ask the children to close their eyes and listen carefully to all the sounds they hear around them.
  • The children will then report back. The teacher should give the children ample time to share their findings.
  • The teacher should then show the children the pictures the teacher selected for the lesson, including pictures of a blowing wind, of bees, animals and insects making "little" sounds, pictures of a breeze, a picture of a tornado, or a strong wind.
  • The teacher will ask the children to interpret the pictures, one by one.
  • The teacher will read the poem to the children, with extra care given to pronunciation and intonation.

  • The teacher will ask the children which picture represents which phrase. The teacher will read the poem again slowly, in order for the children to match the oral information to a visual image.
  • Next, the teacher will teach the poem to the children, making sure they use the correct intonation and voice projections when reciting the poem.
  • The teacher will ask the children to explain the meaning of "little sounds", and give examples of little sounds in nature, and the "whisperings of the world"' and "hidden mysteries."
  • The children should pronounce each word clearly, giving expression to the meaning of the words, when reciting the poem.

Poem: Listen

I'm listening to the wind,

I'm listening to the bees,

I'm listening to the little sounds

In every little breeze.

The world is full of whisperings

Of little secret things,

And little hidden mysteries

And little fluttering wings.
